Some Experience
I've just bought 2 new identical PC's with XP pro installed. Both Cre 2 Duo with 250GB HD and 2GB mem. Both are running ok but whilst one has accepted SP3 from a CD I burned from the .iso, the other will not install SP3 either from the CD or from windows update site. Neither will it install Update for Windows XP (KB898461) and Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1. I've also tried to install IE7 and again no joy with this one machine. The other is fine. Any ideas?

Many thanks,

Bob.

Hello and Welcome to FPCH Bob. :)

Do you receive any error messages during the installation process? If you do, then can you please post the exact error message you receive. Thank you for your patience and co-operation.

As Goku said what errors are you getting from windows updates at MS?

I can't see why you would have to burn an ISO for SP3 when you can just download it.

OK,

When running automatic updates I get the following after attempted installation:
Some updates could not be installed.
The following updates were not installed
Update for Windows XP (KB898461)
Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1

With IE7 I get;
Internet Explorer installation did not complete.
You must restart your computer to remove any changes setup has made.
After restarting, click the “Internet Explorer Troubleshooting” shortcut on your desktop for more information.

I’ve tried turning off anti-virus and anti-spyware progs, and checked I have admin rights, still no joy.

Bob.

Hello Bob. Please have a read of the following articles from the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

Unable to install Windows updateshttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/555461

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP installationhttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

The second article may not be directly relevant but it still concerns your symptoms. Hope you are able to fix your problem soon. Good Luck. :)

Interesting one that!, I followed the instructions and firstly I don't have a C:\WUTEMP folder and secondly there is nothing in the "Windows Update" folder

And yes I do have system and hidden files viewable;)

Well I've followed the instructions for registering the Wups2.dll file from this article and still no joy. Interestingly when I wiew the windows update history the update does not show as "Failed" (A red cross) but simply as a Grey Minus sign.

Ok - did you buy 2 versions of XP - or are you using the same one on both machines -
from the sounds of things Microsoft is blocking the updates installing as it would if a key was used on more than one machine -
And lets just clarify I am not accusing you of anything - it just depends on where you got the machines some people are less than honest.

Both machines came pre-installed with XP pro, both have passed the windows genuine avantage "thingy" the machine in question has downloaded and installed other updates successfully.:confused::confused:

Right - sounds like somewhere along the line the installation has gone bad - do you have any restore points on the pc - I would go back to before all the troubles started and then try and do the installs.

No restore point that would be any good I'm afraid, the first thing I did when I got the machines was to try to install SP3, one worked the other didn't. I wasn't too concerned at that stage as SP2 was already installed but now I can't get IE7 as well I'm a bit miffed. Trouble is this machine is the master of a network of 3 and I really don't want to start again from scratch.:( 2 days lost already.
