Monitor display input problems

Trying to get Philips monitor working with e-machine. Message says 'cannot display this video, change computer display to 1024x768@60HZ. Wanting to pass this PC on to neice but not if it isn't working!

Hello Jet,
I take the monitor is working to some extent. Do you get this message only when you are trying to play a video?

What is the size of the monitor? What is the operating system for the machine? XP or Vista and which version (home etc.)

Is the monitor wide screen or "normal?"

Because of the hour I will not wait for an answer to the questions above and work on the assumption that this is a simple matter of adjusting your screen resolution.

On your desktop just right click anywhere that has no icon and then click properties.

A window will appear. Click the settings tab and adjust the resolution slider to 1024x768.

Have now found a small handbook for the LCD monitor referring to the need for the video resolution of the computer to be set to 1024x768@60Hz. The PC is an e-machine and operates on XP Home edition, the owner unfortunately died and I wish to pass it on to a good home.

If you follow the instructions above your last post you should be fine. If your monitor is not functioning at all please let us know.

Start your computer and press F8 after the boot screen has disappeared - you should get to a screen called Advanced Startup Options.

Select the option Start in VGA Mode, press enter and continue to startup.

You should be able to see your desktop now, although the screen willl look large.

Right click on your desktop and select Properties.

Over the Advanced Options tab at the right hand side, and you will see the monitor settings. You can then set your monitor to the correct resolution.

Thank you for helping me. Switched on everything. Monitor power comes on. The Windows start uo page. I tried F8, no luck and that message about the display inout is floating across the screen again...... Help! This is an old monitor of my own that is redundant but nicer than the one used previously. One came with the PC, an e machines one, and that had a message about VGA mde. That's why I decided to try the Philips... so I am a failure with both monitors.

If I read this correctly you DO get the windows page? Is that right. When you say "no luck" does that mean you can not get the advanced startup options page or that it didn't work? If you could not reach the page you may be doing it wrong.

Start the computer and start tapping F8 as soon as the initial screen starts to come on. Try tapping not holding the key. Sometimes if you start doing this too late it will not work. Try again tapping earlier.

I am trying to do this against the clock as we are off out for the day and the computer is NOT co-operating. So I will tackle the problem later on when I won't have any time pressure. I am grateful or your help, have a good day.

Continuing problems with that monitor

Back to the problem with my 14 inch Philips monitor. I have tried the suggestions a number of times to no avail. This is what happens:
Switch on PC and monitor ON light appears.
E machine logo. I tap f8. hear a long beep from hard drive. Windows XP screen appears, I tap f8 again. Get the shut down follow on and I choose Windows Advanced Options. Choose Start Windows normally. get the same floating image re changing display to 1024x768x60Hz
Just tried again, left the f8 tapping until the Windows XP logo, and instantly had the floating note about display. Hope this information is clear!

Choose Start Windows normally

The problem with that jet is that you were asked to choose vga mode not normal startup.

Select the option Start in VGA Mode, press enter and continue to startup.

Choosing start windows normally is only the long way around to what you do each time you start the PC. Please try again and do not choose normal start choose VGA. On the outside chance that the vga mode does not appear, select safe mode and follow the same instructions as with vga.

Just goes to show it doesn't pay to try to sort a problem against the clock, all is well now that I have followed the instructions to the letter. Thank you very much.
