MS Office 2007 updates failing to install on XP Pro

I have recently had to reinstall MS Office 2007 due to a registry error I was receiving in PowerPoint. Since reloading the whole office suite back onto my laptop windows updates have appeared for the different office programs. I have checked Add & Remove programs and none appear but each time I download them & click install the following messages appear.

Installing Security Update for Microsoft Office Excel 2007 (KB946974) (update 7 of 9)... failed!
Installing Security Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB947801) (update 8 of 9)... failed!

I don’t know if the registry has been corrupt. I am using XP Pro and upgraded to Service Pack 3. All in all the Office programs work fine without any problems. It’s just the windows updates keep appearing and fail to install. I have tried to hide & ignore these updates but they keep reappearing.


Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the speedy response! I have had a look at the article you suggested and neither of the folders mentioned could be found on my laptop. I ran the run command

Click Start, Run.
Type: "regsvr32 /u C:\WINNT\System32\IUCTL.dll" (Without Quotes. You should get an unregistered successfully message.)

But received the following message...

LoadLibrary("C:\WINNT\System32\IUCTL.dll")failed - The specified module could not be found.

There must be something inherently wrong with Office 2007. I have a friend who hasn't been able to install it on his Vista machine. MS needs to do better.

Have you tried installing the Service Pack 3 for Microsoft Office?

uninstall Office via add/remove and then
go into C/program files and delete MANUALLY any MS OFFICE folders -
then try and reinstall it
MS ALWAYS leaves redundant folders in the Program files!

I haven't tried installing service pack 3 for office. Didn't know there was one lol!

I will update if I manage to resolve my problem.

****UPDATE****
I have since downloaded & installed MS Office XP Service Pack 3 as suggested by Goku. Unfortunately upon installing the program the following message appeared...

I have tried clearing office 2007 using windows add/remove prog utility. Upon reinstalling office 2007 using the original CD it fails & will not install. I had to delete some registry files & folders from the C:\Programs folder (similar to the message Dalo left). Once I did this & restarted office installed fine but a hybrid version appeared. Since this the office 2007 windows updates will not install. When I go to the MS update site the updates are shown but the size is 0.00KB. I have made a right mess!!

Disable the auto updates and get on with it.

very helpful! i will find another site and see if they can help me solve my problem. updates should install not failing.

besides ive got xp pro and office 2007 on a dell laptop.

Hi Russ;
When looking for those two folders remember that it said one was hidden. Maybe the other is too. Enable Hidden Files And Folders to show.

I have double checked to make sure that "Show Hidden Files & Folders" is ticked in the Folder Options menu.

I did find something on a MS support page. It mentioned to disable Automatic updates then go to the following folder via >C > Windows > Software Distribution & to delete every file in the Download & Cache folders. Once the files have been deleted turn Automatic updates back on and reboot the machine. I then revisited the MS updates site and tried to download the office 2007 updates again (one is a service pack for microsoft office 2003 (service pack 3)). They downloaded fine but upon installing them each one said downloading then failed.

With regards to another post. I am using Office 2007 on XP Pro (SP3) and I have McAfee Security Centre installed.

Try disabling McAfee when you run the updates. And when you install office (it does say upon installation to disable AV and Firewalls)

I have disabled McAfee as you mentioned and attempted to reinstall the updates. Unfortunately the following updates (below) still failed upon installation even though there were no problems downloading them.

Its very weird why the updates won't install. I've checked Add & Remove Programs to make sure if any of them have already been installed before. None of them appear when I check show windows updates.

1. Please visit following website to download a tool, which can check and
repair Office Windows Installer sub keys.

2. Please unzip the file to the Desktop. We will receive a file named
OUCPR.exe

3. Double click the file OUCPR.exe.

4. If there are any problematic products found, click Unregister to repair.

If this does not fix the problem, then move onto the next step.

Step 2: Make sure that Windows Installer service is set to Enabled

=========

1. Click Start, click Run, type "services.msc" (without the quotation
marks), and then click "OK".

2. In the list of services, double-click "Windows Installer".

3. View the option that appears in the "Startup type" list.

4. If the start type is set to "DISABLED", modify the startup type to a
setting of "Manual". To do this, right-click "DISABLED" list, click
Properties, General tab. And then select "Manual" in the "Startup type" list,
and then click "OK".

How is the result? If the error message is still received, please go to
Step 3.


Step 3: Repair the Windows Installer

=========

1. Quit all programs that are running in the background.

2. Press Start and choose Run.

2. Type in "cmd" (without quotation marks) and press OK.

3. In the command line, type in the following command and press Enter:

MSIexec /unregister

4. Then, type in the following command and press Enter:

MSIexec /regserver

After finishing the above steps, please check the result again. If the
issue persists, please click Start, click Control Panel, and click Add/Remove
Programs to check if Windows Installer 3.1 has been installed. If it has,
please highlight and remove it. After that, please reinstall Windows
Installer 3.1 from the following link.

5. Restart your computer and then test the issue again.

Thanks for the reply, the detail was great but i clicked on the link for http://www.sbor.com/Docs/OUCPR.exe but it didnt work.

Found link to sbor office systems website. Downloaded oucpr.exe which came as in a zip folder. Extracted it to desktop and went to double click the file. It won't open. Tried to rename the extension to .exe but this didnt resolve the issue.
