[Solved] Can't access internet on Windows 2000

I have a PC at work with Windows 2000. I cant use Internet Explorer Mozilla or Firefox. I went to Network Connections and it says connected. I ran IPconfig/all and the IP address is 0.0.0.0. The error I get in IE is can't find server or dns error. I was able to use IE by creating a dialup connection for a couple minutes only. I ran nesth,interface reset all, routing reset all,routing,dump,bye & exit. I ran IPconfig & there was a valid address but still coulnd't use IE. After a while, the IP address went back to to 0.0.0.0. I tried to Ping another PC(I can use IE on this one) and I got an error about host not recognized. I already went to IPsec & TCP/IP filtering. I went to regedt32 ad checked HKey_local_machine\system\controlset001\services\dhcp. TCP/IP is set to automaticall detect IP adress. The DHCP client services is set to automatic. Device Manager says that adapter is working. The adapter is Intel Pro/100 VM. I tried to update the driver. Windows said that it found an driver that was more compatible to the adapter. I tried to install the driver but then it asked me to specify a location. I dont have CD or floppy drive with Windows 2000. Under Network adapters in Device Manager: There are 3 items that have an x. One is Wan Miniport (IPX) #2. And the other 2 is for Wireless. I already flushed DNS and renewed IP address. Also I have yahoo and google toolbar for IE. I ran Malwarebytes before I left. When I go to work I will see if the PC found anything. Also this PC doesnt have any Anti virus software. Any ideas?

Hi and welcome to FpcH

I don't have a Win2K machine so advice may not be quite correct - let me know if things are different.

Start > Run ....type in ....cmd ......ENTER
At the prompt type in ping 127.0.0.1 ( space after ping )

You should get 4 packets sent and 4 received - no losses.
Do you ?

I assume that you are using a wired connection.
Have you tried a different ethernet cable ?

Thanks for repyling back to me. No I didnt try 127.0.0.1. I only tried 127.0.0.0. I thought it was 127.0.0.0. I will try 127.0.0.1 tomorrow. If I get a loss, what would be the next step? I am connecting using a Cisco phone.

Yes I have tried a different ethernet cable. I connected the same ethernet cable to another PC and I was able to use the Internet.

If ping 127.0.0.1 doesn't function without any losses then we need to look at the Network Card / Hosts file / TCP/IP

Also ...... as soon as you get back online you need an AV.
MS Essentials / Avast / Avira are good free ones.

Thanks for replying back. Things got worse when I went to work today. There was no TCP/IP installed the PC. I went to the connection that I wanted and clicked on Properties. There is no Install option in the General tab. I already tried to run netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt but got an error. Someone might of deleted TCP/IP. I tried to do a System Restore by going to Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Backup. There was no "System State" option there. Any ideas?

Now you say that TCP/IP does not exist.

There is something strange here.

This machine does not have an AV.
I am wondering if you have an infection.

No CD drive ?
Do you have a USB port?

I was able to reset TCP/IP. My co-worker told me that he unisntalled TCP/IP the other day when he was trying to fix this problem. I ran 127.0.0.1. I got 4 packets sent and recieved. But I still can't access the Internet. I am still getting the "can't find server or dns error". I renewed/released IP and ran dnsflush.Is it possible that the Cisco phone isnt compatible with Windows 2000?

Hi

I am not familiar with Cisco phones.

Start > Control Panel > Internet Options
Click on the "Connection" tab - is "Never Dial a Connection" checked? ( I think it should be as this is only used for Dial Up )

Is the IP Address and DNS Address allocated automatically or is it static ?
(I would check the box for automatic assign )

Hi,

Sorry not answering your question about the CD drive and USB. I didnt see that question until today. Yes there a CD drive and I have USB port. I will check tomorrow if "Never Dial a Connection" is checked. And I will find out tomrrow what model of Cisco I have. As for the question about the IP address and DNS, the box for automatic assign is checked.

I also have some more info. When I try to run ipconfig/release, I get this error: The following error occured when renaming adapter Local Area Network. The DHCP client obtianed an address that is already in use on the network."

It could be that the DHCP pool provided by the Cisco is too small.
Without the manual I have no way of getting you to check. ( Need the model number )

How many machines do you have on the network ?

Have you tried switching all machines off.
Re-boot the Cisco.
Switch on ONLY the problem machine.
Does it have a connection now ?

I made a mistake about the PC connecting to the Internet via a Cisco phone. The PC is actually connecting to the Internet via a Mitzel 5312. I just found out that the PC's at my job haven't been added to a domain. I have already rebooted the phone. Below are the IPconfig/all results of the PC. I hope this helps in solving the problem:


DHCP Enabled: Yes
Autoconfig Enabled: Yes
IP Address: 0.0.0.0
Subnet Mask: 0.0.0.0
Default Gateway: 0.0.0.0
DHCP Server: 255.255.255.255
DNS Server: 0.0.0.0

How?
I have downloaded the manual for this apparatus and there is no reference to connecting to the internet at all.

How many computers have a working internet access ?

What are they connected to?

Solved problem. Thanks for your help.

There's a ethernet cable that goes from the PC to the phone. And there's another cable that goes from the PC to the phone. There is like 20 PC's that have a working internet access. They are all connected the same way as the PC that I was having problems with.

There were times when I would tap the keyboard when the PC was in sleep mode. I got an error about the system detecting an IP address conflict with another system on the network. It also said to go to the System event log for more details. I went to the System even log and it said that the PC has detected that the IP addess 10.2.11.154 is already in use on the network. I then went to the other PC and ran IPconfig/all. I copied the Subnet Mask/Default Gateway and DNS Server from this PC to the PC that was giving me problems. I also changed the IP address to 10.2.11.7 and the Internet started working. Thanks for taking the time to help me.

Not sure why the same IP Address should be allocated twice - but at least you got the problem sorted.
