Having upgraded to windows 10 I find that when I insert a DVD it will no longer AUTO RUN or list the MENU or CHAPTERS. It lists a stream of info for me to select a run situation. The DVD then plays using NERO, having removed this it now plays using VLC.
How can I please get back to AUTO PLAY and or list the MENU as the standard windows media player appears to be missing??
I have set the start up to be –run using windows media player but it’s not there?

Thanking you all in advance.

FOLLOW UP.

So this is where I’m at—
In win 10 APPS there is–'WIN DVD PLAYER'. When I engage this I get a separate page which says –To play something insert a DVD---I’ve done this but it just sits there with no change,
In win 10 APPS there is—'Films and TV'—When I engage this it shows what is on the hard drive hence I can select then play [but only what’s on the hard drive]
After inserting a DVD into my desktop/laptop File explorer shows the DVD listed, however when I click on this is says Files currently on disc 2 – then shows AUDIO TS and VIDEO TS when I click on VIDEO it shows a lot of files for me to select from.
There is no AUTO RUN?
I may not have explained this very well but you should get the jist. [I hope]

Hi Grandad,

Windows Media Player had a lot cut out of it for Win10.
I only use it to play music now.

Firstly, have you turned on 'AutoPlay'?
Settings >> Devices >> Auto Play.

I'll show you a couple of ways to play a DVD using VLC Player (as that's the only player I use)
Pop in your DVD.

Your Win10 may not be setup as mine so....

Click on File Explorer >> This PC. ( I have my File Explorer to open to the My PC page by default ... I find it easier.)

Right click on the DVD and select Play with VLC media player

A better way if you play a lot of DVD's.....

Click on File Explorer >> This PC.

Right click on the DVD and select Open AutoPlay

a box will come up at the top of your screen, click on Play DVD movie...VideoLan VLC media player.

Now everytime you insert a DVD, it'll automatically play using VLC.

Many thanks STARBUCK , yes I have done the AUTO PLAY SET UP to no avail hence now going for the set up you are using.
Will confirm results ASAP. CHEERS.

Hi Grandad,

Ok, plan B.

Press the Windows key + X (at the same time ) and fetch up the advanced context menu.
Click Control Panel.

In Control Panel, select AutoPlay

Scroll down to the DVD section and click the option box next to DVD Movie.

Select... Play DVD Movie (VLC media Player) then click Save.

You could also set the default options for the other DVD sections if you want.

See if this works for you.

I'm back, got to the auto play section but screen shot is at first not the same as yours. Clicked AUTO PLAY and selected VLC in DVD section ,then save, now I'm getting lost.!!!

In 'This PC'' still have to click Play with VCL player, but do get chapters and menu etc. [still no auto run]
I have a PRE LOVED LAPTOP which is an ASUS, when I put a DVD into this it comes up with ASUSDVDPLAYER and gives me all I need. This is powered by CYBERLINK, however you have to pay for this and I'm a little tight on that side.
Hence result is I will stick with VCL player on my desktop, for now.
Many thanks.

Hi Grandad,

Ok,
Just one thing though....
When you were in the Autoplay section of Control Panel, was this ticked at the top of the page:

Hi,

Check this for me please ...

Click on the "Search" icon [ probably bottom left ] - looks like a magnifying glass
Type in ........regedit .....hit Enter
Next ...
Click the > next to each of the following ...
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]

>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
then
>Software etc. [ you need to click on the > ]

When you get to "Explorer" there will be no > .....so click on the word "Explorer"

Is there - in the right panel - "NoDriveTypeAutoRun" listed ?
If there is - what number is allocated to it in brackets ?

Please do not change anything in The Registry.

Hi KENB, sorry a bit late with this however got to the bit --software ect but unable to find EXPLORER?
Not to worry I will work around this.
Regards.

Hi Granddad

It should be there.
It is easy to click on the wrong path .... could I ask you to check again ?? :)

Sorry KenB I'm late again, been through your list and found the following
No drive type auto run -- is listed.
The number appears to be -- oxooooooff[255]
Hoppe this helps. Regards.

Hi - it is me who is slow this time :)

The number appears to be -- oxooooooff[255]
This appears to be the problem.
This value [ 255 ] disables DVD / CD AutoRun on all drives.

Go back to "Explorer" in the registry.
Right click on ... NoDriveTypeAutoRun oxooooooff[255] ....and select "Modify"

A box will drop down.
The default is usually Hex [ Hexadecimal ]
Click the "Decimal" box.

Change the number in "Value Data" from 255 to 145.
Click OK.

You may have to re-boot for the changes to take effect.

Hopefully this will fix it for you.

DO NOT make any other changes :)

Grandad,

You may wish to change your Operating System in your profile to Win-10
