No worries, I am led to believe the XP disc I have is the one used on this PC. The previous HD was a SATA too I believe?
It is not a 'HP', Dell' or other named tower but a home build from somewhere many years ago.

OK Andy, one important thing before going further is the XP Product key. this may be either still stuck on the Windows XP CD case, or a label stuck somewhere on the computers case. The usual layout of the key is five sets of five letters and numbers in this sort of format ***xx ***xx ***xx ***xx ***xx
If the label and product key can't be found, There are some free programs that can dig it out of the registry. This must be done before we re-install XP as that key will be required to activate XP once it is installed.
Let us know if you do have it, if not we will have to install a key finder program that can dig it out of the registry for us.

Hi Andy

From what I have read - there were no new drivers added to SP3.

If your motherboard has SATA integrated into the chipset then there will be no problem.
( some of the newer boards did )

If it doesn't, and we need to install SATA drivers separately.

If all else fails it is possible to have the BIOS treat the SATA drive as IDE.
It would be a little slower - but you probably wouldn't notice.

please ask if I need to add anything else of importance.
Have you got email addresses saved ?

Before we go any further - can you check in the BIOS that the CDROM drive is the first in the Boot Order.
To do this:
Switch on > constantly alternate between tapping the DEL and F2 keys about once per second.
One of these will let you access the BIOS - this is the easiest way to find out.

Failing that - on screen as it boot up it will say something like ....." Press --- to enter Setup"

Once in the BIOS move around with the arrow keys.
You are looking for Boot Order / Boot Sequence or similar.
If the CDROM is first in the order ( at the top ) then there is nothing to do.

If it isn't then it needs to be moved up.
Use the arrow keys to highlight it - it will say on screen how to move it. ( usually + / - key )
If you do move it then you need to Save and Exit .....Usually F10
Again it will say on screen.

Let us know that you have got this far :)

Sorry for the delay,

Ok, have checked and Boot Order already was:
1st, CDROM
2nd, HD
3rd, LS 120

Sorry for the delay,
No problem :)

If you are sure that you have everything off the hard drive that you need ( photos / files / documents / email addresses etc ) then you can begin the installation process.

Take a look here - click here

As you have the CDROM set as first boot device you can skip through to "Part 2"
Please Note:
This is explaining how to re-install XP using a full installation disk [ not Recovery Disks ]

The only problem you may incur is the SATA drivers ......

Let's know how you get on.

If you have any questions please ask before you start the re-install.

Hi, started the installation a couple of hours ago and have got as far as: number 10.
When the screen gets to 'boot from CD' which I am asked to ignore, instead of continuing to load the Windows XP screen, I get an error message,
It says: A disk read error occurred. - press Ctrl+Alt+Del to start.

What have I not done??

Try this:
It sounds as if the files have been transferred onto the Hard Drive but the system is having difficulty booting up from them to complete the installation.

When you get the "A disk read error occurred. - press Ctrl+Alt+Del to start. " try taking the CD out of the drive and then hit CTRL+ALT+DEL
It may be that the system is looking at the CD Drive when it is expecting the Hard Drive.

Let me know how you get on.

It is probably the SATA drivers - or lack of them.

Go back into the BIOS and look for AHCI next to SATA HDD and see if you can set this to IDE or Compatibility Mode.
Try the installation again.

Sorry Ken, have been in hospital again and just got use of my eyes back again. May have to go back again tomorrow for an op.
I have just seen your message (thank you) but cannot find anywhere on the BIOS what you asked me to do??? Sorry!
Cannot find any reference to AHCI or SATA drive??

May have to go back again tomorrow for an op.
I hope all goes well for you Andy - good luck.

Get back to us when you are able to and we will continue from there.

Hi Andy, once you are OK and hope your eyes are soon OK, we may have to go to what I posted on post 18 and do it the long way round, however get yourself right first and get back to us when you can, we will still be here.

Nev.

Didn't get called today so will have another crack later tonight.
What's next on the 'things to do'!!
I have a pc that will not boot up??

Hi Andy, do you have another PC available or can borrow that you can use to burn disks, as that will be required to make the slipstreamed disk that will then have the required SATA drivers on it.

Nev.

Hi, had my op and can get back to getting this pc working again.
What do you need me to do next??

Cheers

Rightly or wrongly!! - I am having a second go at loading XP on this PC.
It took about two hours last time so here goes!

You can't do any harm Andy - I think, if it hangs again, that it is SATA drivers and Nev will explain how to sort this out. :)

Ok, pc now up and running?? No idea why today is any different to last week but still?
Apart from an anti virus or malware program, is there anything I now need to do to keep this pc running smoother??
