Something unusual happened on this new desk-top - it went blank (screen black that is)for a couple of minutes. To diagnose a bit I switched on the lap-top which also has W10. It worked so it appears not to be my router or server, in the computer/software?

Hi Jim,

My first thought are that it could have been due to a Windows update.
I have had that happen a few times.

I assume that your machine continued to boot up after the black screen?

==============

By the way ....
How did you get on retreiving data off your old Win7 hard drive?

Hi KenB, thanks for answering.

It may have been an update. That was my first thought. It did come back but the screen went black again.

The screen went the same last night and there appeared no mouse either. Again the mouse appeared after a lot of clicking of the mouse. Rebooting the computer got things normalised

I have not got any farther with removing the old disk from the old computer as it seems I am unable to remove the sides

There doesn't appear to be a way in.

Hi Jim
What is the make and model number of your old computer ?

If your new computer is booting up ok best not to meddle ...until it goes wrong :)

Hi KenB and thanks for replying.

The new desk-top went on the blink again tonight. Just before that firefox showed an error of 80------03 and the everything locked up. The wireless mouse and keyboard was a possible source but eliminated on a re-boot ( I think). All is werky werky after the reboot.

There are no identifiable data on the old desktop but it is scrap anyway so if all fails i can break into it.

Hi Jim

There will be a panel(s) on the old computer that can be removed.
If you can find the make and model number for me I should be able to help further.

I thought that I had pulled the old computer apart before now but it has different screwheads than I remember. I am quite used to looking for serial and model numbers so I am quite intrigued why this eludes me. The hd unit is loosed inside the casing but the covers seem to be unremovable. The only panel to come away is the plastic front. It has revealed no numbers.

Any chance of a few photos Jim - I may be able to sshed some light :)

It went flaky again last evening but was ok on a reboot. It gave me an "awe snap-out of memory error" as it died though.

Photoes? Hmmmmm............I wonder what to do? Let me try my way........then you can tell me an easier way :). The pictures show the front-back-bottom-top and the hd I thought I'd released was the power thingy. Jim

Hi Jim
I can't see the make from the pics you have posted :(

It looks as if you have removed the screws from here [ see image ]

If the case is one big "U" shape it should slide off - away from the base - with these screws removed.
It may be a little tight.
Either way the complete top and two sides - or one of the sides should slide off.

Thanks for your continued interest KenB.

Yes if there had been a name/model number I'd have quoted it - unusual for there to be nothing. I'll have to get a bit heavier handed with the casing - perhaps some levers.
Jim

It has to come apart somehow Jim.
I think you said that you don't want the machine - so a lever could gain you access to the hard-drive :)

Thanks for the continued interest KenB. I will do exactly that later today. I was just looking for anything that needed to go to the recycling centre and found a couple of old HD drives. One an old 80 Gbytes made in China and the other of unknown memory from Thailand. I wont take those as I don't know what is on them.
Jim

I was en route for recycling centre and saw something that'd act as a lever and got brutal. the HD is now in my hands so what is next? A btw is that the computer was held together with plastic thingies that required a bit of brute force and ignorance :) It has a memory of 1000GB.

Hi Jim
Now that you have your hard drive could you give me a photo of the contacts where the cable was plugged in please?

There are two types of connection and I need to be able to advise you correctly which way to go next. :)

Hi KenB.
I switched on the camera for it to need charging. I am unsure of how long that takes. 2 to 4 hours it says on the box. Murphy's law or something. I think it's called a SATA hd anyway. The connection before was all pins - this one has slides or what ever they are called. Photo next post.
Jim.

Hi Jim

If it is a SATA hard drive I suggest you get a 3.5 inch SATA Hard Drive Enclosure. [ there may be a label on the drive to confirm this ]

Be very careful when ordering - laptop hard-drives are 2.5 inch and the enclosures are very different.
You don't have to order from Amazon - obviously :)
So - make sure it is SATA and 3.5 inch

When you get your enclosure it is a simple case of opening it up and popping the drive inside.
Then connect up the cables.
3.5 inch drives usually need a mains connection.

Click here for video of how to connect up.

Once connected you can treat the drive as you would a USB memory stick.
You can format the drive and use it for storeage if you wish.
[Obviously don't format until you have all of the data off the drive that you need]

We are assuming that there are no problems with the hard-drive.
If there are - you may not be able to get at your data.

Thanks KenB, specially for the links. yes there is a label on it which says it is a SATA drive. I will revue the drive casings and get an order in asap. I will indicate when I'm ready. Thanks ever so.
Jim.
PS. I hope the photos are ok (if i remember them that is).DSCF3687.JPGDSCF3688.JPGDSCF3689.JPG

Photos are a bit blurred but it is a SATA drive Jim.
