[Solved] W10 flaky tonight & last night

Thanks KenB.
Yes, I realised they were a bit blurry, I was a bit close with the camera assuming the auto-thingy would take care of that :) . I went to the well known auction site as I seem to end up with " P----" on that site. My wife navigates it ok so it seems to be me. Anyway it should be here by the 18th of the month.
Cheers.
Jim.

I have just suffered the black window again. It seems to happen after about 13/14 hours of operation I hope they do a correction update soon!:)
Jim

We have two problems running at the same time Jim - bit confusing :)

When your screen goes black - if you leave it, does it come back on again by itself ?

Take a look here - click here
Check your Power Plan Options.
You are looking for any setting that turns the screen off after a time of inactivity.

Ok KenB. Yes two faults on one thread. It is more difficult for you than me. As the original fault was a flaky W10 perhaps I should start a new one for the W7 files.
I think the flaky W10 must be due to a faulty update as I got no problems with it originally. Only after it had updated. The update would not affect personal settings I assume. I do not think the flaky bit can be due to the power settings as I always set them to "never" on the screen saver and power saver - not very green am I?

I'll start a new thread for the W7 file retrieval.
Jim.

If the black screen is due to the recent update it is possible to do a System Restore to a date prior to the update install.
This would effectively remove the update from your system.

This assumes that you have System Restore enabled and have suitable dates to restore to.

Thanks for your answers KenB.
The computer locked up last evening and again a moment ago. It says 'Gah! firefox has tabbed out. Click restore to get back'. Except restore does not do that but it does let me continue albeit on a minimised screen. The only way is to switch off completely, wait a while and log on again.
I cannot switch it off via the mouse.
Jim.

Hi Jim

Try uninstalling Firefox . [ I assume that you have another browser - Chrome / Edge etc ]

In the Search Box [ bottom left of screen ] type ..... Control Panel ..... hit Enter
Under "Programs" click ..... "Uninstall a Program"
Scroll down the list to Mozilla Firefox
Right click on this and click on "Uninstall/Change"
You will get a prompt.
Follow screen directions to uninstall.

If there is a "Mozilla Maintenance" too - remove that as well.

Run the system without Firefox and see how it goes.
If it runs OK for a while you can always re-install it and see how it goes.

Hmmmm, it didn't work, so I tried Chrome.......nope not that either but it did take me back to the W10 opening page/window. I then got rid of that went to edge........nope so I removed that and downloaded firefox. I wanted ublock origen as although I'd paid for total adblock it would not download.......and they are not helping. I am unable to get into google as my password does not seem to work .
Ah well try again tomorrow.
Jim.

Hi again.
Oooo......the time I have spent on this today. The trouble is that the 'forgot password' part does no work correctly-exacly and there is no other way around it. At one stage I fired up my lap top to read any emails but it decided to do a system verify and I know that the password did not work. I did manage to get this desk-top working but the lap-top was trying to update and shut down and after ages it failed and said 'don't switch off as it failed the update and was reversing the changes. I'll start again tomorrow.........
Jim.

I fired up the lap-top and it went ok.
This desk-top has been switched on for 19 hours and has not been flaky once. Perhaps it was a fluke? I have tried some adblock programs, perhaps it was them?
I will try adain tomorrow.
Jim

It went off again last evening, but less inconveniencing. It has got less so each time it has happened until last evening it said onscreen "Awe snap! Your internet connection has gone wrong, that page is unobtainable, please retry." It has a blue box with the retry in.
Each time it has given the browsers name. Yesterday I was using Chrome. I had tried to help getting wife's Epson3100 printer going as well and attempted to show hers working via the router from this computer by adding the printer here - not that it affects the outcome at all. It came back with you-tube video showing immediately - no waiting at all!
Jim

Hi Jim

Awe snap! Your internet connection has gone wrong
This could be related to your router.
Try disconnecting it for 20 - 30 seconds then power up again.
This will re-set it.

Something else to try if the above doesn't solve it:
NOTE - if you have login details for sites like this saved, you may need to login again with the password etc.

Hold CTRL + Shift + Del down all together.
You will see this:

Make sure that "All Time" shows in Time Range
Put a tick in all boxes EXCEPT "Passwords and other sign in data"
[ i don't think you would wish to lose this data ]
Click on the Clear Data button.

Thanks for coming back on this KenB.

We did have problems with the router and the tech at our server end did some thing that included me switching off the router. Whatever was done got us reconnected but the flakiness has continued albeit at a lower level. We did have a new router awhile back as Memsahb
wanted programs over the router.

I will try your suggestion in the morning.
Jim.

Thanks KenB for contuing with this fault. The screen goes black and it locks everything. I can only see the cursor arrow white against the black back ground. I think it is W10 or the desk-top which is the problem. I have reset the router under instruction from the Plusnet Techy, tried every browser at my disposal and I know that the power and green "saves" are showing nothing. I do not get the same on a laptop that has W10. I cannot remember from whom it was suppled either for warranty. I do know that restart enables me to continue using utube.
Jim.

Hi Jim,
Try this ....
We are going to start your problem machine in Safe Mode
This starts it with minimal drivers. The screen will look odd but you will have access to the internet and your files.
This is NOT a permanent arrangement - just a test :)

You will need to write this out.

Click on the Start Window bottom left of screen
Click on the Power button then hold down the Shift key and press Restart.
Select Troubleshoot

Then select Advanced Options

In Advanced Options select Startup Settings

1643041838892.png

Click on Restart on the next screen.

Your machine will now restart and you will be given a choice of options.
1643042102316.png

You want to start Safe Mode with Networking - so select this option by hitting the 5 key.

Your machine should now boot up.
The desktop will look odd but when you re-boot everything will be back to normal.

We need to know if the machine works OK in safe Mode.
Try using this mode for a while and let me know if you get any glitches / black screens etc.

Thanks for the reply KenB, it is very time consuming and annoying.
Today it put a blue filter screen over the picture/video. I did have control via the mouse though. I couldn't get rid of it, so I went via re-start. That worked fine.

I printed your instructions so I can start after the zoom call tomorrow at 09:00.
Jim.

Hmmm, going that route would take most of the day in that mode It is taking less time to recover now though. I do as it requests to 'restore' the page and now it comes back to what I was watching on YT. Perhaps it will be self solving! I hope so.
Jim.

Safe Mode should, if anything, be quicker once you have booted up. ??

Hi KenB.

KenB said Safe Mode should, if anything, be quicker once you have booted up. ??

I assumed that safe mode would detect the problem only when it happens -after12 hours plus.

Having managed to get to an HP techi on the phone he was all prepaired to put in a re-write of W10 but I wasn't.
When I was (had savedmy data) I was unable to get to him as all I got was an automated answer machine on the same number.
Very frustrating.
Jim.
PS I was just unable to keep a card game of Solitaire open a few moments ago - it closes every time I start it.
