[Clean] Asus X5DC laptop running very slow.

Hi Seedy21, sorry for the delay in replying. I've been away for a few days. I have tried my machine again today and it is no better, in fact, if anything even slower. It took a whole minute to arrive at my goole home page, then I had several attampts to list an item for sale on Etsy. Each time I kept getting the usual 'Etsy is not responding' message and I have eventually managed to list the item, but it took about 20 minutes to do something that normally takes about 5 minutes. Even when trying to load this blog, I got the message 'not responding due to a long running script' then it eventually loaded. I hope there is still something you can advise to help. Regards, Jontye

Hi jontye

Lets reset IE.

  • Close all Internet Explorer windows that are currently open.
  • Open the desktop, and then tap or click the Internet Explorer icon on the taskbar. Changing your settings will affect both Internet Explorer and Internet Explorer for the desktop.
  • Tap or click the Tools button
    f2d3a394-a4c3-4747-989e-cf3f6b782b2f_43.jpg
, and then tap or click Internet options.
  • Tap or Click the Advanced tab, and then tap or click Reset.
  • In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, tap or click Reset.
  • When Internet Explorer finishes applying default settings, tap or click Close, and then tap or click OK. You'll need to restart your PC for these changes to take effect.

Please let me know if this resolves your issue.

Hi Seedy21, I've just done what you asked above. This seems to have made some difference, For example, my Google home pade opened in 15 seconds. I then went to my Etsy shop. This took 26 seconds to open. I then tried to view my listings but got the message 'Etsy is not responding'. When left for about another 30 seconds it did start to respond again. I went from there to this blog - it took 36 seconds to open. So it seems faster but looks like I'm still have episodes of 'not responding'. Regards, Jontye

Hi again Seedy 21. I thought I'd let you know I take it all back - the machine is not running any faster. I opened it today to create a document in Word. It took 1 and a half minutes to load Word, but before it did, all the desktop icons went blank then slowly re-loaded. I then clicked to go on-line and it took one minute and 30 seconds to load my home page, followed by a minute aned 20 seconds to load this blog. Regards, Jontye

Hi jontye,

Step 1

Please try running IE without addon's.

In Windows 7, to run your Internet Explorer in the no add-ons mode, Open Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

Step 2

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:

  • Flush DNS
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log

Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Step 3

  • Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter
  • Click Continue
  • A window will open
  • To set up a regular schedule to defragment your hard drive
    • Check Run on a schedule (recommended)
    • Select the time of day and day of the week that works best for you
    • Select the volume (drive) to be defragmented
  • To defragment right now:
    • Click on the Defragment Now button
    • Select drives C and D to defragment
    • Click OK to begin the defragmentation process

Hi Seedy21, I'm contacting using my laptop this time, because when I tried following your instructions my wife's machine a threw wobbly, losing the wi-fi facility and I'm having a problem getting it switched back on, tried the F4 + F2 keys numerous times without success.
The laptop doesn't have a wired connection other than an ethernet cable, which, at the momemt, I don't know how to connect.
I will get back to you as soon as I get the wi-fi connection up and running. Jontye.

Hi, I've connected to IE with ethernet cable, MINITOOLBOX results attached. Jontye

Hi Seedy21, I've carried out steps 1 to 4 and the laptop seems to be responding much better, My wife is going to use it for the next few days and see how it goes. I will post the outcome.

When I ran the MS FIXIT it found that the 'Data Execution Prevention' was disabled and actioned a fix, so that may have been the problem.

As I posted a few days ago we are unable to switch on the wi-fi connection and are having to use the ethernet cable, do I need to start a new thread for this ?

Regards Jontye.

Sorry Jontye I thought you resolved your issue with the wi-fi. Let me know how the machine is going first then I can move the topic out of Malware Removal and focus on the Wi-fi issue.

Hi Seedy21, Firstly, I've now sorted the wi-fi problem, reset it using the Microsoft fixit facility.
The laptop has been running much better but still had a couple of problems with ' Page not Responding' so I've uninstalled IE 11 and reinstalled it using your instructions, we will use it for the next couple of days and let you know the outcome.
Regards Jontye.

Hi Seedy21, We've run the laptop for a couple of days and it is much the same, not quite as bad as it has been but we still have problems such as,

Taking well over a minute to open a site page,

Not responding on a number of times, inparticular on Paypal, sometimes eventually responding other times having to use the recover page option,

Once when using GMail a message popped up 'something not right, having trouble connecting to google'

Even during playing a game of 'Spider' 'not responding message' appeared.

Strange that we don't have the problems all of the time

Is it possible that it's faulty hardware ?
Regards Jontye

FOR SEEDY21 ONLY:

Sorry for butting in. I was just wondering about a couple things that may or may not be relevant.

In the past I have seen slow page loading issues on some but not all computers running Internet Explorer 11 on Windows Vista. Perhaps trying Firefox or reverting to Internet Explorer 10 may shed some light.

I saw some errors relating to Trusteer Rapport. If this was or still is installed maybe it's related.

You mentioned that MS Word was slow to open. Are other programs slow to open? Does it take quite some time to boot up? You don't have a fast processor or a lot of RAM but it should be enough. If RAM or the hard drive is failing it can cause some slow issues. Since this is a HP computer it may have built in hardware diagnostics that you can run.

the machine is not running any faster. I opened it today to create a document in Word. It took 1 and a half minutes to load Word, but before it did, all the desktop icons went blank then slowly re-loaded. I then clicked to go on-line and it took one minute and 30 seconds to load my home page, followed by a minute aned 20 seconds to load this blog

Please do not make any changes unless instructed to do so by seedy21.

Hi Seedy21, When we first had the problem of slow running I checked for any recent installed programmes that were not downloaded by us, this Rapport was the one I noticed. I tried unistalling it, but it refused to move, so we contacted Rapport help and they, eventually, giuded us through the unistall, although the programme was unistalled, according to Rapport, the listing was still there.
Rapport assured us that the programme had been unistalled and the listing would disappear from our list of programmes, as you can see it is still there, I've just tried to unistall again and I'm getting this error message 'Error opening installation log file.Verify the specified log file location exists and is writable'
There is no 'File size' showing against the listing just install date, 7/4/15 and version number 3.5.1208.34
I will not move onto step 2 until I hear from you, there is no urgency for your reply as I'm away until the back end of the week,

Regards Jontye.

Thank you for the update Jontye.

Please move on to Step 2 when your next at the machine.

Hi Seedy 21. Sorry for such a long gap between your last post and this one. We had a family bereavement so not been doing much on the pc. I followed your instructions and created a new user account. Since then the machine initially seemed improved with some 'not responding messages' but quickly followed by a response. However, it is now back to square one. Sometimes it takes 2 whole minutes to load the home page. My wife gets regular 'not responding' messages, sometimes followed by a website then quickly responding but other times when it just doesn't respond. Tonight we have also had two occassions when the machine froze. The first time she was simply going to her home page (Google search) and she ended up having to switch off and start again. The second time she was trying to get onto JD Sports when it froze completely so she waited. After 4 minutes the clock jumped forward 4 minutes and the site started to load up. Maybe we need a new laptop?

HI Jontye,

Can you let me know what Make and Model your laptop is? I would like to see if the unit has some Hardware Diagnostics tools we can use.
